POPGUNPULP is...

The studio of Mitch Gerads (Illustrator) and Scott Dillon (Writer.) Centering on their currently self-published comic book, The Daring HI-Fi Adventure Tales of JOHNNY RECON.

Popgunpulp was born of a mutual love of comic books and a mutual love of retro illustration and adventuring sensibilities from yesteryear and how we can take those things we love and make them fresh and new again.

...and, as Mitch always says, "...because rayguns are just cooler."

JOHNNY RECON Reaches its Pledge Goal on KICKSTARTER.COM!!

A few days ago you people (Yeah! YOU people!) made two independent artists pretty much the happiest two people on the planet (Maybe even OTHER planets!).

Not only did we reach our pledge goal, but we filled out our highest reward (Exciting!) and we were KICKSTARTER’s Project of the Day (It just so happened it fell on a weekend with a holiday, so we were Project of the Day for like 3 days)!

We really can’t thank you guys enough, so we went to one of our neighborhood shops and shot this little thank you video for you guys. These are not actors! (which becomes pretty obvious, you could make a drinking game out of how many times I look off camera in these videos.)

Click HERE for our special Video Thank You!

We still have a lot of time left for this project here on Kickstarter and any extra funds we get we will use towards attending more conventions and the publication of issue #3! So please keep spreading the word, because you know we will be!

Again, thank you guys, you’re the bee’s knees!

TWART (Twitter + Art)

Over the last year I’ve made a lot of great friends and a LOT of really good illustration and comic connections via Twitter. Recently a group of 15 or so of these great comics professionals and I started picking characters for us to sketch on the same days. Thor Thursdays etc. Well a couple days ago, Chris Samnee (DC’s The Mighty, Marvel’s SIEGE: Embedded, etc.) took the bull by the horns and we’ve now officially amassed and started a weekly blog based off this concept!

The idea is that each week we’d rotate and pick a new character. Then you have five days to post your illustration to the blog. We unofficially started with RONIN (Clint Barton, Marvel) but now officially we’ve started the blog with Mitch Breitweiser’s (Captain America, The Futurists, Marvel sequential artist) pick of Zorro!

Since we started posting last week we’ve gotten a lot of great internet press ( http://ow.ly/YjRW ) and I couldn’t be more excited to be lumped in with this great group of artists. I’ve had an amazing last couple weeks, both in my career and personal life (I mean HELLO, we reached our goal and became Project of the Day on Kickstarter!). To be included with these guys is just unreal.

So I urge you all to keep checking out our work over at the Comic TWART blog…

http://www.comictwart.blogspot.com

As for the humongous news about reaching our goal and the future of JOHNNY RECON on Kickstarter, I just finished editing a Thank You video we put together last night and I’ll post that first thing in the morning. Thank you all!

HAPPY 2010, RECON RANGERS!!

Wow, just wow.

2009 was an incredibly year for POPGUNPULP Comics, Scott, and I.  After years of talking about it and numerous starts and stops.  We put together the story that both of us had always been dying to tell and that continues here and now in 2010.

We created this studio, started this company, released the first issue of what we hope AND KNOW will be a long running series because we have so many stories to tell and these characters and their world are full of them.

We’ve also met so many people this year who have guided us and supported us on this path.  I don’t want to rule anyone out, so I won’t name any names, but you all know who you are because we continue to value your presence in our endeavors.

Also to the fans, old and new.  You’ve been absolutely incredible this past year.  We’ve met the coolest people at conventions, store signings, and through retail.  It’s always so much fun to talk with you and your support means the world to us. Truly.

As absolutely amazing as 2009 was, I think both Scott and I know that 2010 is going to be our year.  I couldn’t be more excited for where we are and where we’re going.  The script for JOHNNY RECON No.02 is completely solid SCI-FI adventure.  You guys are going to eat it up.  I’ve recently begun laying out the entire book visually and it’s pretty safe to say that both Scott and I will be showcasing our current professional best.  I’m pretty biased, obviously, but it’s going to be a showcase book for us.  Watch out potential publishers!

I think our fans can sense it too, we have 75 days left on our KICKSTARTER campaign and you have already gotten us 43% of the way there!  Wow, just wow.  That is incredible.  The more pledges we receive from KICKSTARTER, the more we can distribute JOHNNY RECON to a wider audience, attend conventions in your home town, etc. etc. and you get some pretty great stuff for your contributions to boot!

Thanks for being an integral part of POPGUNPULP Comics and JOHNNY RECON, this past year as well as the new year coming up.

I wish all you and yours the best year of your lives.  As always stay tuned to this channel for everything JOHNNY RECON, POPGUNPULP, Mitch Gerads, and Scott Dillon!

Howdy, Rangers!

Just wanted to share a couple great new articles about JOHNNY RECON and our KICKSTARTER campaign.

The first is from one of my favorite comic news sites, COMICATTACK.net.  How cool is it to see JOHNNY RECON news right next to Marvel and DC news? Super Peachy Keen!

The other is from longtime supporters and supreme purveyors of indie comic work, INDIEPULP.com!

Check them out and spread them around, we want our Kickstarter campaign to be big news!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM POPGUNPULP COMICS!

Happy Holidays to all the wonderful people and fans we’ve met this year and those who have been supporting us for even longer than that.  I’ll get far more gushy about this on New Years, trust me.

Everyone be safe, drive safe, throw a party, crash a party, everyone have fun, and “wang-chung.”  I hope you and yours have the best Chrismukkah (10 points for an OC reference!) or whatever it is you celebrate at this wonderful time of year.

POPGUNPULP Comics has a LOT of news and excitement to drop on you after the “Christmas-Time” Holiday.  We have some really fun stuff planned right away, so stay tuned.

The best to you and yours.

That big news i’ve been talking about?  It’s here!

Hi everyone!  For a couple weeks now I’ve been talking about secret projects and big news.  Well, it “dropped” last night.

We’ve joined with the fine folks at Kickstarter.com to launch JOHNNY RECON No.02 as a project on their site!

Kickstarter.com is a new site that helps you raise funds for creative projects but with a twist that makes it half fund-raising and half an online store.  Through the web-site you can pre-order your EXCLUSIVE KICKSTARTER COVER copy of JOHNNY RECON No.02 by pledging in one of the many “reward packages” that we have set up.

Your pre-order is then dependent on us reaching our goal in the 90 days that we have our project on the site.  Your card will only be charged at the end of those 90 days if we reach our goal.

This is going to be a huge deal for JOHNNY RECON and POPGUNPULP Comics and your support absolutely means the world (the planet!) to us.

Check out the website, read our pitch, and watch the video.  Help us bring JOHNNY RECON to a much wider audience and get something for supporting your local independent artists!

Here’s the link!  JOHNNY RECON No.02 on KICKSTARTER.COM

Throughout the 90 days of fundraising on Kickstarter.com we’ll also have the links at the top of this site, so you can always get to it, and see the progress!

Also, help us get the word out, send the link around, tell your friends!  We’re having some postcards printed up to give to comic shops, so stay tuned for those as well.

Thanks again and stay tuned to this channel for more info on JOHNNY RECON No.02!

SCOTT DILLON is my new favorite writer…

Hi Rangers!  I have some exciting news, that for all of you who follow me on FACEBOOK or TWITTER, have already heard, i’m sure.

Scott [Dillon], who has been hard at work on the script for JOHNNY RECON #2 for a couple months now, sent the full script to me yesterday and let me tell you, it is awesome.

I understand that I am completely bias on the matter, but even if I wasn’t co-creator and I wasn’t drawing it, this is phenomenal storytelling.

Scott and I learned so much making the first issue, we know what worked and what missed it’s intended mark in both writing and art, but this script nails it.  It’s a perfect jumping on point.  I always said issue #1 felt like a TV pilot, well issue #2 is where the studio gave us the green light and duffel bags of cash and we’re making a big budget spectacle for all of you.

Scott is a phenomenal storyteller who has never really worked in comics before, but with an issue under his belt and all he’s learned, he delivered 24 pages of solid, smart, epic, personal, action-packed, often hilarious, heart warming, science fiction, fantasy, fun.

So I will stop going all “Mark Millar hype machine” on you (Great band name!).  I just wanted to vent my excitement for this project, pump up a good friend and storyteller, and most importantly let you all know that my work on JOHNNY RECON #2 begins…….

……

MN FALLCON 2009 WRAP-UP

‘Sup, Rangers!

FALLCON went tremendously well for us and we want to shout out our sincere thank you’s to everyone who stopped by and talked, bought from, and stared at us.  Scott and I had an awesome time and can’t wait to be a part of FALLCON 2010.

Also a very special thanks to all the people that organized the show.  I’ve been to a lot of shows in my life and no one has ever been more organized or treated us as well as you did, much love.  That chili was the bee’s knees.

Another special thanks to all the fellow creators we met.  You’re all good people, especially our new buddies, Chad Spilker and Chris Rich-Mckelvey and an old buddy, Jordan Gunderson.  You guys were hilarious, and we can’t wait to hang with you again.  You’re good people!

FALLCON also marked the last of the 2009 conventions.  The new season doesn’t start till spring 2010 and POPGUNPULP Comics plans to bring JOHNNY RECON on the road to as many shows as we can make, as well as some store appearances from now till then.  It will be a banner year for our little adventure book, believe me.  Issue No.02 is being worked on right now and we’ve got something special cooked up for it.  It’ll require some ‘esplainin,’ so stay tuned for announcements throughout the rest of the year.

What else, What else?

Original art pages from JOHNNY RECON No.01 and the convention prints will be available online very soon.  I’m very excited to be able to offer those to you and collectors.  We have a couple FALLCON prints still avilable as well, so i’ll get those on the site soon.  Literally, I think there’s two left.

That’s all I can think of for now.  Just because the convention season is over doesn’t mean i’m not going to be continuing to make all sorts of posts on the site.  So stay glued to your screens!

JOHNNY RECON is ready for FALLCON this weekend! Are you??

Hi everyone!

This coming Saturday and Sunday, Scott and I will be attending the 2009 MN FALLCON, held in the Grandstand at the MN State Fairgrounds in St. Paul.  This is our first hometown show and we’re super excited for it.  FALLCON has really grown over the years and has become quite the event.  Click HERE for times, directions, etc.  We’d love to see you, so stop on by and if we don’t already know you personally, make sure to introduce yourself!  As always, we promise the fun.

We’ll obviously be selling JOHNNY RECON No.01, I’ll be doing commissions and sketches, we’ll have what’s left of our previous exclusive prints and also our brand new FALLCON 2009 EXCLUSIVE print (See above!) or follow THIS LINK to get a better look at it.  I’ve got something a little special for this print…

The FALLCON Exclusive print is in two versions, an A and a B version.  The A version is as you see here, and the B version is a yellowed “vintage” version.  Both prints are VERY limited to 9 prints of each version.  If all 18 prints sell on Saturday, I will print another run of 9 for a C version available on Sunday (The benefit of living mere miles from the Convention :) )

All versions are signed and numbered and available at the POPGUNPULP table for $10.00  Special Convention Deal:  If you buy the FALLCON print, you can pick up any of the other prints for $5.00

In other news, JOHNNY RECON No.01 SOLD OUT the first week at the SOURCE Comics and Games!  Scott and I are like giddy little school girls about it.  We’re so flattered that our book continues to sell exceptionally well and publishers have definitely taken a notice.

That’s all I got for now.  Hopefully we’ll see you at FALLCON this weekend!  Look for the bright red POPGUNPULP tablecloth, two handsome dudes, and our new awesome JOHNNY RECON backdrop display!

Space is a very shiny place in JOHNNY RECON!

Hello Recon Rangers!

Finally put the finishing touches on the JOHNNY RECON vinyl banner the other night.  I think it turned out super wicked space awesome and can’t wait to have it standing behind us at all our upcoming conventions and appearances.  Click HERE if you want to hear me rant some on the artistic process.

In other news, JOHNNY RECON No.01 is now available at THE SOURCE COMICS + GAMES in Falcon Heights MN, Big Brain Comics in downtown Minneapolis MN, and our flagship JOHNNY RECON retailer, the COMIC COLLEGE in uptown Minneapolis MN.  So stop into one of those fine stores and pick up a copy if you haven’t gotten one yet.

Yet another thanks goes out to all the people who showed up at the JOHNNY RECON No.01 release party.  Scott and I are still on cloud 309 about that.

Gearing up for FALLCON in just a few weeks!

Stay tuned Rangers!

Keep an eye on the website, we’ll be sharing everything we can talk about with you as POPGUNPULP brings you the further DARING HI-FI ADVENTURE TALES of JOHNNY RECON!
